Preorders now open for Avatar: The Next Shadow

Preorders for Avatar: The Last Shadow are now up for issue 1. Plus we get a look at the actual cover of the first issue. So far I don’t see any alternate covers, so it will be interesting to see if any are added in the near future. The issue releases on 1/6/21 and is 32 pages in length.

Jake Sully maintains his position as leader of the Omatikaya Na’vi tribe, but with their homeland in ruins, he begins to doubt his place among them. As the Na’vi and human feud persists, tensions between the tribes begin to escalate as longstanding family rivalries ignite–spawning treachery and betrayal! * An untold story set immediately after the events of Avatar!

I find it very interesting we have a human on the cover of the first issue. This is a continuation of the Avatar story from the first movie, I’m curious if all the RDA aligned humans weren’t expelled or if more have already shown up. The story the Hollywood Reporter shared said this story takes place in the immediate aftermath of the movie, so I look forward to finding out more about what’s happening on the cover.

My personal online comic shop is TFAW.com as they are part of the same company as the Avatar series publisher Dark Horse. Click Here to preorder.

New Avatar Comic Series coming in 2021

New Avatar Comic Series coming in 2021

Exciting news released today about the next Dark Horse Avatar comic. On January 6th, 2021 Avatar: The Next Shadow makes it debut. It is a four part series that continues directly from the movie story. It will cover the struggles of Jake Sully as he tries to keep the Omatikaya Clan together after events of the movie.

This is extremely exciting news. After the recent announcement of Avatar 2 being pushed back another year we didn’t know when we’d get our next release. Thankfully they are still going to be releasing new media for us fans to enjoy. It’s exciting that we are getting a continuation of the story from what we last saw in Avatar. The previous two Dark Horse comic releases expanded on what we saw in Avatar, and even showed some of what happened before the movies timeline. However we haven’t had anything from the ending of the movie forward. So get ready to see what Jake and the Omatikaya Clan have been up to since the death of Eytukan and the destruction of Hometree.

Check out all the details from the official release at the Hollywood Reporter.

Fan Theory: Eastern Sea Ikran Leaders name

Fan Theory: Eastern Sea Ikran Leaders name

The Eastern Sea Olo’eyktan (clan leader) is my favorite character not named Neytiri in Avatar. We know so little about her but I’ve noticed she has a lot of fans all over social media. That red war paint just looks so cool, plus she fearlessly leads her clan into battle after Toruk Makto comes and asks for their help. But after we see her and her clan fly into batter we sadly don’t see her again. So who is this red painted warrior who stands out in Avatar, will we see her again? Whats her clan name?

I think we might have some of the answers, although none of it is straight forward. Allow me to explain. Quite some time ago now Avatar.com updated and added some new information on their website. On thing added is a profile on some new clans. Some we had seen in Toruk: The First Flight, others we had seen in James Cameron’s: Avatar The Game, and others had been in Avatar the first movie, but their name wasn’t mentioned. We are only going to focus on one of those, the Tayrangi. Lets take a look at what Avatar.com says about the Tayrangi.

When I saw this the very first thing that stood out is the Eastern Sea Olo’eyktan is shown on her ikran in front, this screenshot Avatar.com used is taken from the final battle in Avatar. Also the Tayrangi “analysis” above describes what little we know of that clan. All they are mentioned in Avatar is by Jake, “the ikran people of the Eastern Sea.” So I don’t think its much of a reach to assume she is the Clan leader of the Tayrangi. She also shows up in the comic, Avatar: Tsu’tey’s Path, in the very last issue although no new information is given. Here is her appearance.

This brings me to the newest information I’ve come across and this is from Avatar: Pandora Rising, the new mobile game. Currently it is not yet released in the US so I haven’t played it. However it is available in some other countries and people have shared screenshots of the characters bio’s from the game. From those bio’s we get the first names we’ve seen for members of the Tayrangi clan.

Nanti, while a seemingly cool character doesn’t seem to provide any further information on the clans Olo’ektan, however does Tsentey provide a clue? His bio says he is husband of “Ikeyni.” Sadly we don’t have a bio from the game of anyone named Ikeyni, but they mention her, making me think she is someone possibly of more importance than simply being his wife. It’s just a guess, and one that could very well be wrong but I am thinking Ikeyni may very well be our red war paint Tayrangi leader. The only other thing that might support this is the fact he is a veteran ikran rider, and I’m going to assume our red paint Tayrangi leader is also someone who is a veteran of a clan. I wouldn’t think the Na’vi select young clan leaders unless the older veteran leader has died or become unable to lead. So it would make sense to me if our Tayrangi leader has a husband they’d both be considered veterans.

What are you thoughts? It is admittedly a stretch to try and connect those dots, but I think it’s a solid theory with what little information we have so far. Let me know what you think via social media, or the comments! Thanks to Exostrike for showing me where the Pandora Rising bio’s were, and to Tsu’rat for sharing them with the community.

*EDIT* As of 6/16/20 we now have confirmation Ikeyni is indeed her name. Thanks to Olly on the LN discord server for sharing this and again Exostrike for alerting me.

Dark Horse Comics to release new Avatar based series called Avatar: Tsu’tey’s Path

Dark Horse Comics to release new Avatar based series called Avatar: Tsu’tey’s Path

If you haven’t heard yet, on September 27th Dark Horse Comics announced they will be releasing a new Avatar series called Avatar: Tsu’tey’s Path. This is the first of the upcoming Avatar comics we learned about in October of 2015. At that time James Cameron teased that the upcoming comics would tell stories from the past, present, and future of Avatar.

After that announcement we didn’t hear much else about when the comics would start happening. In December of 2016 it was announced for FCBD (Free Comic Book Day) of 2017 Dark Horse would be releasing an Avatar comic. You can read more about that in a previous article we wrote HERE. Now it seems we are finally getting into the actual story lines. I am very excited to see where the comic takes us with Tsu’tey and beyond. The FCBD issue was short but very entertaining and had really excellent art work. The upcoming Tsu’tey series is keeping the same writer (Sherri L. Smith) from that issue, and the artist (Doug Wheatley) is going to be doing the covers. However the illustrations will be from Jan Duursema, and inks by Dan Parsons, with Wes Dzioba providing colors. I thought Doug Wheatley really nailed Pandora in comic form, but after checking out the other artists work I think we will be in great hands. The first cover by Wheatley was also released when the series was announced and it’s stunning.

I cannot wait to see where this first series takes us. Even though Tsu’tey passed away I’m glad we will get to know him even better starting this January 16th!

Revisiting the Avatar comic

Revisiting the Avatar comic

For those who don’t know about or don’t remember, lets take a step back to May 6th, 2017. Dark Horse comics released an Avatar comic on Free Comic Book Day (FCDB) to comic shops around the country. It was a short story but had some great artwork and colors. The story followed Jake Sully and filled in some missing details the movie didn’t have a chance to cover. It was a small taste of what is to come, but it was a fantastic tease. We haven’t received any official word of when the series will officially launch, but it is rumored to be sometime in 2020 before the release of Avatar 2. In case you haven’t picked up your own copy yet I won’t spoil it for you. But here is a couple of pages that show how the book turned out.

The series was originally announced by James Cameron at NYCC in October of 2015. He said it will follow story lines from the past, present, and future of the first Avatar movie. Also a preview of the cover was released that featured Akwey the horse clan leader from the first film, and even had him riding on a toruk. However before the comic was released it was updated to Jake Sully, both the main picture and the na’vi riding toruk.
